CITYSCAPES: LEGO "Modular" Buildings
The Palace Cinema |
While building our Harry Potter and medieval scenes, we kept an eye on the modular but did not buy any at first. I was intrigued by the elegant look of the Cinema, but didn't buy it. Then, after we succumbed to building all the others, we finally bought and built it. It was a pleasure to build, with all kinds of new strategies and pieces.
It's hard to say which of this whole series is our "favorite" as they were all challenging and fascinating to build. It is hard to see how Lego will be able to come up with anything new, after these large masterpieces with thousands of bricks each. |
There are two large searchlights in this set. I forgot to put them in the photo. I am hoping to figure out how to actually LIGHT them with the elements I have. (I have also omitted the second floor, which is fascinating. Will get a photo of that and mount it here soon.)

LEGO Town Hall (10224)
As with all the other modulars, we dragged our feet on this one too. I said, "No way, it's too big, too expensive, there's nowhere to put it, and it looks too much like the Fire house. No way. Don't need it, don't want it. Absolutely not."
So here it is. It just took longer than the others to arrive. Town Hall has some intriguing details in the interior - especially that world globe, a real collector's item. Nice upstairs conference room; a mayor's office with secretary and balcony; a downstairs assembly/ lecture hall with tiered seating; tiled lobby with marble statue and clerk's office; and a manually operated elevator. As always, the hidden whimsical details are never seen from outside. We particularly liked the way the Corinthian columns were made, and the Greek revival style pediment on the front. Our purchase decision was motivated by parts: just look at all those windows, gray bricks, and long, brick-colored bricks! We were just about to purchase a second Fire Brigade to loot for parts, but it suddenly became a retired product and its price doubled overnight. So this will be the one we sacrifice. We do plan to disassemble this one soon and use the parts for our ongoing MOC projects. Several mini-figs are in here, 6 adults and 2 children as I recall (they're all inside). I've had my eye on the set's bride and groom since the beginning: another top hat and bridal dress for my turn of the century mini-figs. I may now have enough "red sandstone" bricks to start on Netherfield, one of my four Pride and Prejudice buildings. |
